After watching the Rebels - Highlanders game this morning it becomes clear to me that the main problem of the Highlanders this year was the number of players way too old to be competitive. Amy team with a substantial number of 30+ year players are not going to be successful. The geriatrics inclusive of Thorn, Hore and Woodcock played like champions in the first half and then went AWOL in the seond half. That I believe was the main reason for a Rebels team made up nearly entirely of youngsters ending up beating them. I think that It is always wise to bear in mind that players between 25 and 29 are in fact in their prime - and unless their are unusual circumstances of high level performance by individuals on a constant basis - once players reach the age of 30 years of age - they should not be automatic choices once teams are being selected. That is also the reason why I believe it is wrong to constantly hearken back to the past and even suggest players like Bakkies Botha should be recalled to the Springbok team
