It's frustrating to think Andries Bekker could be at 5, and the lineouts could be an area we dominate. Instead we have Flip at 5 in the team sheets, and a lot of question marks about how our lineout will function. - Just playing Flip in general is a frustration. No Bok lock is ever as clumsy in the tackle....and no Bok period gives away as many penalties that were not necessary, in worse places on the field. He has single handedly taken us out of close tests in the past. - So I'm curious as to how the Boks will arrange the lineout. Does the more athletic Eben leap at 5 and who shoves behind the tighthead? But it's the lineout that is a puzzle with a bunch of earth bound loosies and the heavy on his feet Flipster. For the first time in a long time, we need to worry about the lineout.....or do they just throw everything to Eben?

What a collection of rubbish we have insofar as line out play is concerned. We have one line out player of repute - Etrzebeth and zero else. Van der Merwe is on par with Kruger in respect of line-out performances - both are way below requirements. Our loosies are disastrously poor in that Department of the game. How did we manage to get to that stage? Obviously it is Meyer who buggers up squad and team selection on a regular basis and intended to use Kruger till he drops - with Flip as his back up. However, Kruger has no grunt and was a disaster at Mendoza - so Meyer had to reconsider. What he is left with is a brainless penalty machine or a gruntless nothing - what a position to be in?

 Meyer said in a telly interview he does not think Aus will kick out much. But if they do homework they will. Mr. Mozard is correct, as for jumping our loosies are useless. I think Beast is faster and jumps higher than Alberts. SA have some questionable combinations for sure.

The selection of Flip at 5 reflects just how poor Meyer is. Flip is a big bruiser type of lock in the Bakkies mould, he is not athletic or agile so why on earth play him at 5 when you have Etzebeth in the side, who is bigger than Flip but an athlete who is clearly at home at 5. Flip is a far better option than the very average Kruger who adds nothing to the Bok cause. He is in fact a liability as he adds no grunt to the engine room, is poor in the tackle and you never see him with ball in hand. It is also clearly apparent that he never clears out a ruck or lends much clout to a maul. Flip will at least add grunt in all departments but one certainty is that he should not be at 5 in the line-out. He is not my choice of lock to partner Etzebeth, but he is far better than Kruger

 Flip is a better bet than Kruger.  I dont think our lineout will be a issue, I dont remember the aussies ever dominating us at the lineouts. Now all of a sudden we swap kruger for flip and most people think were screwed in the lineouts.

Reality is that there is nothing special about Krugers line-out work at all. He certainly does not stand out. Etzebeth for a start looks a better jumper. 

 

The sooner we see Steph du Toit join Etzebeth the better

 Am a big fan of de Jager, but Steph du Toit is the real deal. de Jager would be on my Bok bench

 It would be good to have steph du toit as our number 4 hopefully he will return from injury shortly,for now i would atleast include de jager in the squad surely!We have treed flip flop and Kruger many times and im not impressed.

Steph du Toit will play 5 for the Boks with Etzebeth at 4. With Steph du Toit injured, my locks would be de Jager and Etzebeth without a doubt. de Jager is better than Flip and in particular Kruger

 Flip Flop has been a penalty machine since day one. 

However he did put in a good performance against the All Black forwards in Hamilton last year which was probably his best match for green and gold.

He also done pretty good this year when playing against Western Samoa and added some muscle and ferocity to the pack.

 

Steph Dutoit is a very mobile number 5 and very effective at the breakdowns.

 

 

A forward pack that would be very effective at the breakdowns-(assuming all fit is):

 

1. Beast

2. Bismaark -(effective at breakdowns)

3. Coenie -(effective at breakdowns)

4. Eztebeth

5. Pieter Steph (effective at breakdowns)

6. Brussouw/  (effective at breakdowns), or Deon Fourie

7. Flouw (effective at breakdowns, or at least last year he was).

8. Alberts (effective at breakdowns).

 

Most of the pack are good at the breakdown, but also strong carriers.

 

The pack tomorrow has lots of strong carriers, but the breakdown could be a concern (once again......)

Sharkbok If there is one thing Alberts is not - it is being effective at breakdowns - he is NOT. Depends on where the breakdowns is of course. Further out he is never near the breakdowns - he arrives too late or by the time he arrives at breakdown 1 the ball is already at breakdown 2. On the fringes - he is near enough - but the result is obvious - very slow and ineffective recovery. None of our loosies for the past year was effective in ball carrying - the best one in fact was Vermeulen - but the average carry never even reach a 2 meter advantage. I do no think that other than Bismarck and Etzebeth any of the forwards showed anything at all in ball carrying capacity. I am going to watch carefully whether any of our loosies are effective in any aspect of loosie play - but I doubt that it would happen I am particularly worried by defence - the three loosies last year in the Soweto test was atrociously poor in defence. You cannot go into tests with a pack of 8 tight forwards - you need 5 tight forwards and three loosies.
