So I did a little playing around and wanted to get your opinion on how we should be building our squad over the next couple of years given that the boks didn't play for a year, we had the BIL tour and then loads of games away from home which meant it was do or die. We seem to be developing better now. We have the URC, there seems to be less SA players in the top Leagues with only the English teams having the most of our players.

I have put a list of players together that was used this year and that played test matches. However, there were some players that have been capped before by Rassie but didn't make it onto the field.

In  brackets (age at time  of world cup + Present Test Caps) So the age is how old they will be at the world  cup

I can't see the squad changing unless of course there are injuries but I dread the idea of Vermeulen playing on for one last hurrah. Pity also that there still isn't a suitable replacement for Pollard. I'd like to see Evan Roos and the loosie from the Bulls(forget his name) get a call up but I doubt it will happen, the current squad is pretty much locked and loaded

We are short a few Looseheads, but Thomas the Tank could fit the bill

Hooker, Marx is our best player, just a question who should be our 3rd option. Richards would have been great as can play flank and hooker.

Tighthead, no clear winner here, Nyakane will be 34 and he barely can play a full 30 minutes. Malherbe is injury prown and will probably be twice the size by then.

4 Lock, not convinced by Moerat but lets see what he can do this season in the URC. RG is my obvious choice but he has had knee problems and not sure with his frame whether he'll be able to stay fit.

5. Lood will be 30 by then, seems to be the media favourite and coaches loves him.

6. Kolisi will be pushing 32, he is sublime form right now, lets hope can continue, Van Staden has had a break out season this year.

7. Other than PSDT as the front runner, Kwagga is doing a good job but I would go for a bigger seven and not Mostert. One of the Du Preeze or even Hanro Liebenberg.

8. Not convince of Wiese, Dan is not a coach favourite either so wonder who will fill the void once Vermeulen is gone, surely not a starter at 37 and already showing signs this seasons

9. Hendrikse has potential, hope he can get some  games under his belt, Jantjies is bombing right now and should be dropped,  De Klerk and Reinach are pushing over 30 and might not be as fast as they are now.

10. Pollards selects himself, but we have no backup 10 as Jantjies will be 33. We need to get a decent 10 ASAP. Maybe Goosen but he'll be 31. So one of the youngsters. Maybe Jaden Hendrikse brother is showing promise at the lions but lets hope he can stay injury free and force his way in. Please, no Willemse.

11. Mpimpi at 33, would he still be as good? Fassi can fill the wing maybe as he has the pace and skills.

12. De Allende seem to have cemented his place, but we need Esterhuize and Jan Serfontein has been missing in action. Maybe a slot for Willemse but not convince he is the answer.

13. Happy with Kriel and Am, Simalane has potential but need a lot of work still.

14. Kolbe  and Nkosi are still good here.

15. I'm rooting for Fassi, has great height, good in the air, excellent kick and really good runner. Can  also distribute and maybe slot at 10 if needed. Le Roux should go and don't think Steyn will have much left in the tank by then.

Good thread. Will go over this more later when have time. Right now, I dread to think about what the next coach will be, or where José will leave us. There's a lot of work to do!

At 13, the cupboard is bare after Am (we don't have any test quality alternatives). Haven't seen Serf play there in a while.

12 has options, but the coaches are intent of sticking with Dud1.

We can get by in the front row with what we have. Probably the most depth we've had in a long time. Lock? Van Rensburg is a must.

8? Wiese is the clear option. Dan at 7 is another. No PTSD needed. Kwagga at 6 with Van Staden on the bench.

I definitely would like to see Evan Roos being brought into the wider group. I would also like to see Tyrone Green being added.

Goosen made an impact for the bulls but he is out for the season now, so don't think he'll win  the race to get back into the boks.

Dave

I think th following needs to up their game or being changed:-

Willie

Steyn

Pollard

Vermeulen

Mostert

I am particularly worried by the flyhalf situation.   After his return from injury Pollard seems to be playing the Morne Steyn game and that is an absolute disaster in the making - it neutralizes backline performances.    I wish we can find over the next two years an alternative or back-up flyhalf and was looking at a number of options.

Steyn has serious limitations as a replacement full back  - he is definitely not a center or flyhalf replacement.    His problem at full back is pace deficiency causing defense problems.

Willie is definitely past it.   He had a couple of substandard tests this year

Vermeulen is much weaker than he as in 2019  and is likely to bow out sooner rather than later.   He played due to injury less tests than normal and when he did he was not the same player he was in 2019.

Mostert is a physical liability at lock and a poor open-field defender making him useless as a loosie.    Even in traffic he is a weak defender and has to be helped by others to bring down carriers.

But will Rassie pull the same stunt and select a senior statesmen like he did with Schalc Brits?  Back then we needed Frans Steyn as he was the only one left that won world cup, but we have enough world cup winners in the team. So no need to hang on. We are building good depth, but i you look at the average age the starting 23. The boks will average age will be 31/32.

We going to end up in the same  place as where we ended up when  Meyer  left the  boks, either the some of  the players were way to young or there were no  seasoned players  left, the   same happened when  De  Villiers took over. But from  Meyer we still had a good crop of world class  players.

So I  wonder who are the players under 23 in  key positions that should get in  game  time,  they will be 25 at the next world  cup and  then  also 29 at the following one. But I think we need at least 10 players now that are 23 and  under if we were to built the next generation of boks.

Take a look at all the eight squads for the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier 2022. For the October 16 to November 13 tournament, 14 teams have already qualified. Now, the two finalists in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022. I think this world cup before the biggest world cup will let the selectors decide the fate of players either they have to s tay or to be replaced.
