It seems Meyer has no place in the squad for a small fetcher.....like Brussouw. He appears to be in accord with Jake's view (which I agree with) that fetching is a team responsibility.  Meyer no doubt would never have picked Watson either.

Instead tall physical loosies appear to be the flavour of the day. It will be interesting to see how this all works when the Boks face Pocock.

Likewise in the backs, all the "small" players are out....and rangy types like Basson are in. There is no doubt Basson trumps a player like Aplon in the air. But Gio is a defensive rock....he makes all his tackles in space. And out wide it's more important you make the tackle versus denying a metre or so of kinetic movement. And Aplon has vision, aggressiveness and instant acceleration.

I also believe you need size and physicality in your inside positions.....but on the wing I'd choose the guy more likely to crack open defences and make his tackles. That's Aplon.

The problem Meyer has created stems not so much from the philosophy of big backs and no fetchers....but from the choices backing up those philosophies. Olivier, Kirchner, Basson and JJ just aren't going to strike fear into AB hearts. In fact they are unlikely to play much. So to select the Bools he feels close to, but wont play much, he has left us with a vast sense of inequity.

If you don't believe me read the Keo reader comments or the Rugby 365 comments. Guys are pissed. And all for no purpose. The stupidity of that should bother us most.

National coach is exactly that. A person who draws together the vast rugby resources in a proud rugby country. Unnecessarily rubbing WP faces in it, by leaving out superior players like de Jongh and Aplon, who he never needed to start anyway, reads like sheer stupidity. And a complete failure to understand the job.

Moz you are so wrong as many have been pointing out for ages. de Jongh is not by any stretch superior to the players Meyer has selected. The guy is a non entity, done nothing for the Stormers this season in a dominating side and has done less whenever he has played for the Boks.

As Meyer has said, he sees JJ as a future star at 13 and I am with him here. He has something to work with, a kid with all the attributes to make a hit of the outside centre spot......skill and physicality. de Jongh lacks size and therefore Meyer is restricted in what he has to work with and there is no go forward with de Jongh......why select him in the squad when he is not going to work with him. Chances are JJ will be on the bench, much like Taute would have been. Meyer has identified these players as Boks of the future and I can see why. He earmarked JJ and Sadie from WP and brought them over to the Bulls for he saw potential in them. Sadie has slipped due to injury and a lack of physicality. He might start with Jean at 13,  but there is no investment in that, he needs to look at beyond Jean and that will be something that will need to happen in the very near future. Jean is past it and its going to take this season for Meyer to realise this, when Jean is exposed at test level at 13. Tuilagi is going to have him for breakfast.

Now for the fetchers, well Daniel is certainly not in the squad as an 8 given Spies and Kankan are on board. He has played most his rugby as a fetcher and no doubt Meyer sees him as such. He is smaller than Brussouw. Then we have Coetzee all of 4kg's heavier than Brussouw and having played most of his rugby at 6 for the Sharks. So no, Meyer still sees a role for a smallish fetcher, why Brussouw is out of favour only Meyer knows, but then again it was you that was pointing fingers at Brussouw not so long ago.

Aplon is an old man, we have Habana and JP as well established wings, why on earth would we select at 30 plus Aplon as an option. Select the younger Basson, Mvovo and JJ as options - makes perfect sense.

Selections are made for a reason, not to appease the Stormers fans. He selected these players to work with. I am with him on Kirchner, easily the best back-up to Lambie at 15. der is spot on when it comes to Kirchner, he is a great attacking 15. Olivier is not going to play much test rugby if any but is there as a back-up to Frans given Jean will play 13. Whitehead is injured, so the only other option was Olivier - it makes sense. I have never and will never buy into the crap that Olivier failed at test level for the reality is he never played many of his tests at 12 and never got an extended run there. He is a far better player than some make him out to be.

Meyer has selected well, but for the inclusion of Franco v/d Merwe for Bekker and the exclusion of Brussouw, Kolisi, Elstadt, CJ Stander and Josh Strauss.......but having said that, Kolisi and CJ Stander will be training with the Boks along with the impressive Arno Botha, Malherbe, Frans Venter and v/Zyl.......Meyer really does have it right

Guys any team with two v/d Merwes in it is suspect....and then you also have the young (sell your centers) Jantjies as a possible fly-half with a second string scrumhalf who cannot make the Bulls starting line up in S15.

KanKan and Dr du Plessis....wow!!!!

Don't know about the selections but will sure find out pretty soon.
