In last year's opening RC test against Los Pumas, they deployed this shape religiously for over 40 minutes, but couldn't pry the Bok defence open or generate momentum. The Boks held firm around the fringes. Here, Steph presented an opportunity for free space and Sanchez took it. At 01:23, Steph has Sanchez looking at that blindspot, as he is entirely locked in on Kremer. Mostert is disconnected by the Steph rush.
AUGE CONCLUSION: Had Steph advanced up with the rest of the line, Sanchez throws a simple short ball to Kremer to crash it up. The Boks get to soak up the pressure from Steph's prior lapse and eventually repel the plucky Criollos.
ALTERNATE SOLUTIONS: Does anyone else have another solution which does involve Steph rushing out of the line? How does Mostert account for that space, and how can he overcome the speed of Sanchez?
THE ORIGINAL KHATA'AH OF STEPH
The phase which started the Puma attack. The ball rolls out of the ruck behind Cubelli. Steph immediately rushes out to tackle him. Cubelli though only has to turn and scoop up the ball and flick the ball up to Sanchez to take Steph out of play.
Kwagga rushes up to tackle Sanchez, but misses the tackle. Sanchez steps inside towards the prior ruck, but passes out to Moroni. This action draws in Eben, leaving Pollard to deal 1v1 with Moroni. He misses the tackle and Los Pumas advance forward with the Boks scrambling. This leads up to the defensive lapse which allowed Sanchez to setup a try.
THE MOSTERT TECHNIQUE
Before the above, there was a phase where Los Pumas threw exactly the same shape at the Boks. This time, Mostert was the lead rusher. Mostert tracks the carrier, Sanchez, then shifts out with the pass to tackle Figallo with minimal fuss. straight to ground. What we learn from this is that Mostert reads play more proactively and makes many adjustments in fractions of a second. Things Steph clearly doesn't or cannot do.
