Zavos, hardly a Bok fan picks his team of the decade: Zavos World Rugby XV is: Carl Hayman, John Smit, Jason Leonard. Martin Johnson, Victor Matfield, Richie McCaw, Richard Hill, Sergio Parisse, Fourie du Preez, Daniel Carter, Shane Williams, Brian O’Driscoll, Stirling Mortlock, Bryan Habana, Chris Latham. That choice should settle the Matfield debate, and the Habana vs hahaha Howlett debate. Great centre pairing, great halfbacks.

Zavos' comments: 'World Rugby magazine has selected Carl Hayman, John Smit and Gethin Jenkins. The first two names get my vote, too. But Jason Leonard, who appeared in four World Cups, three Lions tours and is the most-capped prop of all time, replaces Jenkins. Rugby World magazine’s second row of Martin Johnson and Victor Matfield picks itself, as far as I am concerned.'

Sadly if we go to the decade of 2010 to 2020 , we don't have greats like Habana, du Preez and Matfield who demand selection. Smit for me was more of a world class leader.

The problem is by 2011 the three players mentioned was over the hill and not really performing well enough to be even in the SA team of the decade.   Du Preez may have been the exception - but his injuries coupled to his real loss in performance levels played a role.  

The other two was probably somewhere near the bottom of the list when it comes to performance level in the present decade.  Habana on test level was good until 2014 - but then went into decline and his latest tests were in fact substandard.

A pity - but the rugby careers of players are short and performance levels are best in the age group between 25 and 30 = with rare exceptions being younger than that.  Older players in the end inevitably ruin  their reputations.

I think it's timing Denny. Joost probably was at his peak from 1995 to 1999. Overall I think most fans, myself included, would pick Joost.
