As the Stormers gear up for the 2025-26 Vodacom URC season, they're desperate to ditch the 'hit and miss' label that stuck last season. The team dazzled intermittently but fell short when it mattered, notably in their quarter-final clash against the reigning champs, Glasgow Warriors. Now, they're out to turn those occasional sparks into a steady inferno.
Last year, the Cape Town crew was a scoring juggernaut, smashing a whopping 507 points to finish third overall, while also leading the league in offloads (234) and clean breaks (176). They obliterated Benetton 56-5 and showed no mercy in their 48-12 rout of the Dragons, proving their offensive prowess.
The Stormers have seen a fair share of roster shuffling. The homecoming of Springbok scrumhalf Cobus Reinach from Montpellier is a major boost. The additions of Ntuthuko Mchunu, Ruan Ackermann, and Hencus van Wyk further beef up the squad. However, the departure of key players like Manie Libbok and Joseph Dweba leaves notable gaps.
"Every new season brings new challenges and opportunities. With the mix of fresh and seasoned talent, we are ready to elevate our game and push for consistency,"
noted a team spokesperson.Among the emerging talents, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is one to watch. After clinching the South African URC Player of the Season title in 2024-25, he's set to lead the charge with his sharp playmaking skills, now that Libbok has exited the stage.
The team also welcomes promising youngsters like Junior Boks captain Riley Norton and flyhalf Kyle Smith. Their integration into the squad alongside Currie Cup standouts Alex Groves and Jared Africa adds a refreshing dynamic to the team's strategy.
With a fresh logo and kit to boot, the Stormers are not just revamping their look but their gameplay too. Their season kicks off with a promising lineup of fixtures, starting with a home game against Leinster on September 26. The team seems poised to blend experience with youthful zest in their quest for URC glory.
