Newly minted Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann isn't here to play favorites. Fresh off the bench and taking over from Jake White, Ackermann faced the press with a clear message: at Loftus, you earn your stripes, reputation be damned. Just a day into his official tenure, and he's already shaking things up.

"To play for the Bulls, you have to earn the jersey," Ackermann declared, setting the tone for his leadership. "It doesn’t matter if you’ve played 100 Tests or are fresh out of the U20s. If you meet the standards we expect as coaches, you’ll play." This ethos of merit over history is a breath of fresh air and a clear departure from the past regime.

Ackermann isn't just about tough love, though. He's big on culture, looking to cultivate an environment where teamwork and respect are paramount.

"I want a team that works hard and puts the team first. It’s about serving others – picking something up off the floor, handing someone else water first, treating people well. That builds respect and trust, which are everything."

It's clear he wants to build more than just a team; he's looking to build a brotherhood.

While he holds the title of head coach, not director of rugby like his predecessor, Ackermann's heart remains on the field. "Even ‘head coach’ is not always right for me, because I want to be on the field. That is important to me." His hands-on approach could be just what the Bulls need after a rough final season under White.

Regarding the squad's current mindset and the looming decisions on his assistant coaches, Ackermann remains pragmatic. "The reality is, if you haven’t worked with a player or a team, it’s difficult to come to any conclusions. For me, the first thing is to get to know each player and what their strengths are." His decisions on staffing will hinge on alignment with his vision and system, ensuring everyone from the players to the coaches fits into the new Bulls blueprint.

Ackermann's era at Loftus Versfeld is poised to be one of hard work, mutual respect, and no shortcuts. The Bulls' fans might just be in for a treat as this no-nonsense coach sets out to transform the team from the inside out.
