Johan Ackermann has thrown the form book out the window ahead of the titanic north-south rugby clash between the Vodacom Bulls and the Stormers this Saturday at Loftus. Despite the Bulls packing their squad with Springboks in a bid to sustain their recent upswing, and the Stormers reeling from a trio of losses after a strong season start, Ackermann insists that past performances will not dictate the day’s outcome.

The Bulls, revitalized after overcoming early season hurdles, seem to be hitting their stride just as the Stormers limp into Pretoria burdened by recent defeats. Yet, the Bulls’ coach Ackermann cautioned, "

'Historically, it’s a great derby that goes way back. The form often counts for little when these rivals meet.'

" He highlighted the intense rivalry and the caliber of players the derby attracts, noting the immense pride and historical significance of the encounter.

While the Stormers managed to secure a narrow victory earlier in the season, beating the Bulls 13-8 in Cape Town, they are not to be underestimated. Ackermann praised his team’s composition, saying, "

'We’re really blessed in that we only have [Strevino Jacobs] and [Akker van Der Merwe] out, the rest of the squad is all selectable.'

" This depth, he believes, could be pivotal in reversing their previous loss to the Stormers.

The Stormers, on the other hand, are not without their merits. They boast some of the best set pieces in the competition, excelling at lineouts, mauls, and scrums. Despite recent setbacks, these strengths, coupled with their earlier season form, could see them rise to the occasion.

Ackermann also pointed out the unpredictable nature of rugby, highlighted by recent games in the Six Nations, "

'Rugby has an equalising factor. If you don’t perform on the day, you don’t get the result.'

" This statement serves as a stark reminder that despite all predictions and preparations, the outcome hinges on the performance on the day.

Both teams are gearing up for what promises to be a fiercely contested battle, with much at stake for pride and position. As they prepare, the return of key players for the Stormers could also serve as a significant boost. The stage is set for a dramatic showdown at Loftus, where past glory and current form will collide in a historic rugby spectacle.
