Andre Esterhuizen, the Springboks' imposing hybrid player, recently opened up about the challenges and nuances of toggling between inside centre and flanker under coach Rassie Erasmus' experimental strategy. Initially tested in this dual role during a dominant 54-7 thrashing of the Barbarians, Esterhuizen's physicality at 1.94 meters and 114 kilograms makes him an ideal candidate for such versatility. Despite the natural fit, he admits it's a tough gig, especially during training sessions.

"It was obviously an interesting decision. Luckily, the size makes it easier to be able to do that,” Esterhuizen commented during a press conference in Durban. “For me, it was quite natural. Obviously, there are a few things to learn still and to pick up. But it is tough in front there, especially the training sessions. It’s a lot different than the backs’ training sessions. But, for me, I quite like it. I give myself a bit more chance to get into the team."

"For me, wherever I go on, 12 or 6, I'm just happy to play."

The Springboks are gearing up for a crucial Rugby Championship clash against Argentina in Durban. With all teams tightly packed in the standings, the upcoming matches are critical. Springboks attack coach Tony Brown emphasized the need for readiness and dominance, pointing out Argentina's recent successes over formidable opponents.

"They’ve beaten the All Blacks already, they’ve beaten Australia,” noted Brown. “So the message to our guys is if we don’t prepare as well as we can, if we don’t pitch up and be as physical and dominant as possible, we’re going to be put under pressure. So getting our game right is the massive part for us this week."

Esterhuizen echoed Brown’s sentiments, acknowledging the tough challenge posed by the South Americans. "They are a very good side, who like to move the ball and use their opportunities, so the big challenge for us will be to try to counter their loose play, and we also need to deliver a quality performance until the final whistle," he stated. Adding to the intensity, he remarked:

"It’s always hard playing against them because they are a tough and passionate nation, but they’ve also come a long way in the last few seasons."

The Springboks will meet Argentina again in a pivotal rematch at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, marking the final round of the competition on October 4. As the tournament heats up, each team vies for supremacy, promising a fierce and strategic showdown in the weeks ahead.
