Felipe Contepomi, head coach of Argentina's rugby team, has unveiled a formidable 34-man lineup for the imminent Rugby Championship clashes on home turf against the formidable All Blacks. This selection marries seasoned prowess with fresh talent, with Julian Montoya, a seasoned hooker who recently transitioned from Leicester Tigers to Pau, wearing the captain's armband.
The squad sees the inclusion of Toulouse players Juan Cruz Mallía and Santiago Chocobares, as well as the Clermont duo Marcos Kremer and Bautista Delguy. First-time call-ups for the year also include Mateo Carreras of Bayonne and Ignacio Ruiz from Perpignan. However, notable by his absence is veteran second-rower Tomas Lavanini, recently cut loose by Lyon.
Contepomi's roster is further bolstered by the return of Tomas Albornoz, Gonzalo Garcia, Franco Molina, and Joel Sclavi, all pivotal in Argentina’s recent 28-24 triumph over the British & Irish Lions, though they sat out the July Test series against England.
"The Rugby Championship presents us with a huge challenge as a team, and we’re eager to reconnect after the three weeks of the July window,"
Despite the strong team, the Pumas will miss the services of Benjamín Grondona, Emiliano Boffelli, and Thomas Gallo due to injuries. The first of their Rugby Championship games are scheduled against New Zealand on August 16 in Cordoba and August 23 in Buenos Aires, promising thrilling rugby action.
Contepomi expressed his anticipation and strategic focus for the matches, aiming to build on their successful 2024 campaign where Argentina clinched historic wins against New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia, finishing third. The coach also took a moment to acknowledge the unwavering support of their fans.
"Hosting the All Blacks in our home country is always special, and we’re excited to face them for the first time in Córdoba and to meet them again in Vélez. We wanted to sincerely thank everyone who came to training, the hotel, and the stadium. Your support is very important to us,"
With the Rugby Championship on the horizon, the Pumas look set to once again prove their mettle on the international stage, backed by a blend of experienced warriors and burgeoning talents, all under the watchful eye of their seasoned coach, Felipe Contepomi.
