"I’d like to share the experience I’ve built up over the years. You learn from every person you play with. I want to pass on what I learned from someone like coach Frans Steyn to guys like Michael Annies and Cohen Jasper."
Blommetjies's role goes beyond just playing; he's a mentor for the younger backs, focusing on their decision-making and maintaining composure during high-pressure moments.
"Sometimes the back three can lose their heads when something happens in a match and they move away from the game plan," Blommetjies explained. He emphasizes the importance of sticking to the game plan even under stress.
One such example is Michael Annies, a player with a natural inclination to make bold plays. Blommetjies often has to remind him and others in similar moments to stay calm and focused.
"Michael Annies is someone who, when he gets the ball, just wants to run. There are times when you need to tell the guys around you: 'Let’s just relax a bit. Let’s make sure we’re playing in the right areas of the field.'"
Last weekend, Blommetjies played alongside Annies and Jasper in a nail-biting 29-27 Currie Cup victory over the Lions. Now, their sights are set on the upcoming game against the Sharks XV in Bloemfontein.
The goal for the next match is clear: secure a full five points and build momentum for the remainder of the season. But, the aspirations stretch beyond just game tactics.
"At the end of the day, we want to win the Currie Cup. We want to see the stadium full again. We want the people of Bloemfontein to come out and support us. We want to make Bloemfontein proud," Blommetjies passionately stated.
With the Currie Cup season heating up, the experienced fullback's leadership will be crucial in guiding the Cheetahs, potentially all the way to the finals. His dual role as both a player and a mentor reflects his commitment to the sport and the development of its future stars.
