Boan Venter, who transitioned to the Lions from Edinburgh this season, reflects on the unique pressures of playing well-acquainted opponents. “It’s definitely a bit more personal,” Venter noted, highlighting the close ties with the Bulls' players. “We know all of the guys personally on that side of the Jukskei. We know everyone by name, and some of them we’re good mates with. It’s a completely different challenge.”
“It’s definitely a bit more personal. We know all of the guys personally on that side of the Jukskei. We know everyone by name, and some of them we’re good mates with. It’s a completely different challenge.”
The Bulls started their season with a strong performance, clinching a victory against Zebra in Parma, although they faced a setback against Munster in Limerick last week. Venter acknowledged the Bulls' renowned strength and physicality. “Their set-piece is going strong as always,” he said. “They are physical, and that’s what they’ve been known for for the last few years.”
Venter, who has recently played for the Springboks and earned 10 Test caps, commented on the invaluable experience gained from international play, particularly in scrums. “The experience at the Boks is just a different class,” Venter expressed. He values the lessons learned from scrumming against top-tier international players and the opportunity to transfer that knowledge back to his URC team.
"The experience at the Boks is just a different class. The guys you get to scrum against in the Springbok camp, I think that in itself gives you a lot of experience and teaches you a lot of lessons. It’s nice to be able to bring that back here, and work with the younger guys and keep learning so we can move forward."
Underscoring the significance of well-executed set-pieces, Venter added, “The set-piece plays a massive role, as you saw in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry. If you get that done right, the rest just falls into place much easier.” With these strategies in mind, the Lions are gearing up to face the Bulls in a match that promises intensity and fierce competition.
