On a day marked by American celebrations, it was the Springbok Women who lit up Ellis Park with a dazzling display of rugby, overcoming the USA Women 34-21 this Saturday. The South Africans, led by coach Swys de Bruin, showcased a dominant first-half performance that set the tone for their victory.
The match kicked off with center Ayanda Malinga slicing through the defense to score within the first six minutes, followed by a successful conversion from winger Jakkie Cilliers. The momentum continued as scrumhalf Unam Tose found the try line shortly after. Prop and captain Babalwa Latsha demonstrated her leadership and strength by adding another try, pushing the Boks further ahead. The standout performer of the half, No. 8 Logan Welman, secured two tries from attacking scrums, with Cilliers converting one to end the half at a commanding 29-0.
As the second half unfolded, Vainah Ubisi quickly extended the lead with a try after sustained pressure, making it 34-0. The USA team, however, showed resilience. Their comeback continued as Tessa Hann and Ashley Cowdrey managed to pierce through the Bok Women’s defense, bringing the score to 34-14. In the dying minutes, Elizabeth Cook's effort from close range brought the USA closer, but the gap proved too wide to bridge.
"Our team showed great character and resilience, but the Springbok Women were formidable opponents,"
noted Vogel after the match. The victory was particularly sweet for the Bok Women, who not only triumphed on the field but also demonstrated the depth and skill within their squad. Despite the USA's late surge, the day belonged to the Springboks, who celebrated their win amidst the cheers of a home crowd.
Springbok Women's try scorers included Ayanda Malinga, Unam Tose, Babalwa Latsha, Logan Welman (2), and Vainah Ubisi, with Jakkie Cilliers converting two of these tries. For the USA Women, Freda Tafuna, Ashley Cowdrey, and Elizabeth Cook crossed the try line, with Annabella Vogel successfully converting all three attempts.
