Brodie Retallick, the towering lock for the Kobe Steelers, has weighed in on Dave Rennie's appointment as the new All Blacks head coach, suggesting Rennie’s tumultuous tenure with the Wallabies has only honed his coaching prowess. After being axed by Rugby Australia in 2023, Rennie's journey hasn’t been smooth, marred by Australia's dismal performance at the World Cup, failing to advance past the pool stages for the first time. Yet, Retallick sees this adversity as a crucible that has forged a better leader.

Rennie's return to New Zealand to helm the All Blacks marks his first stint in his homeland since 2017, post his departure from the Chiefs to coach abroad. His international experience, according to Retallick, is a boon, devoid of any provincial bias which often clouded team selections in the past. “We definitely see the advantage,” Retallick affirmed in an interview with D’Arcy Waldegrave on Newstalk ZB. “He’s been away, learned tough lessons, and it’s shaped him into the coach he is now.”

“I’m sure that probably scarred him a little bit, but I think he would have grown from that.”

Retallick's insights extend beyond Rennie's resilience. He praised Rennie’s knack for building strong teams by surrounding himself with adept personnel, a trait that has translated into success wherever Rennie has coached. “He’s brought people he trusts from Europe and New Zealand into Kobe, enhancing our coaching quality to world-class levels,” Retallick noted, emphasizing the comprehensive support system Rennie constructs.

“He has surrounded himself with quality people which I guess from his point of view makes his job easier, but from a player’s point of view, it gives us a level of coaching that is, in theory, world-class for a Japan team, and that’s down to him really.”

Rennie's clarity in expectations and his continuous push for player improvement resonate with Retallick, especially as he ages and continues to strive for peak performance. “Rennie always says he’ll coach you, good or bad, and keep challenging you. That’s crucial for any player looking to up their game,” he added.

With Rennie at the helm, the All Blacks are poised to enter a new era, potentially leaving the Wallabies to rue their decision as they watch a revitalized New Zealand squad under his guidance. As the Rugby World Cup looms on the horizon, all eyes will be on Rennie's strategy and whether his past experiences will indeed translate into future successes.
