It was supposed to be a walk in the park for the Vodacom Bulls, fresh off their triumphs over Western Province and the Sharks, but instead, they found themselves schooled in the fine art of rugby by the Pumas with a staggering 41-7 defeat at Loftus Versfeld. Bulls coach Phiwe Nomlomo wasn't shy about admitting the game was a tough, albeit valuable, lesson.
The Bulls faced a pre-match scramble that saw a shake-up in their lineup, with key players being pulled into the URC squad and last-minute roster changes throwing a wrench into their plans. The absence of Springbok wing Aphiwe Dyantyi just before kickoff was a blow, but debutant Riyaad Bam stepped up to the plate, scoring the lone try for his team. Meanwhile, PA van Niekerk got the nod to start, moving up from the bench to take his place in midfield.
The Pumas showcased a level of experience and teamwork that the Bulls couldn’t match on the day. Coach Nomlomo highlighted the disparity in readiness and physicality between the teams.
"If you play against a 28-year-old and you’re a 20-year-old, you must still show up and do what’s required."
He stressed that age and experience shouldn't be excuses for not meeting the mark. The speed and physicality of the Pumas were a wake-up call for the Bulls, who might have been a tad overconfident after their recent successes.
"It’s a pleasure to learn from a team like the Pumas, who convincingly beat you."
Nomlomo remarked, pointing out that the defeat, while bitter, provided crucial insights and learning opportunities for his squad.Reflecting on the match, Nomlomo admitted, "Sometimes when you're in the race, you might get a false sense of security." The loss, according to him, was a stark reminder of the realities of competitive rugby and the continuous improvement it demands. Today's game, he believes, taught them a lot, potentially shaping a better, more resilient Bulls team for future contests.
