Imagine a world where rugby season never ends. Well, peek into South Africa’s rugby scene, and you might not need to stretch your imagination too far. Willem Strauss, the big boss at the Bulls, is waving a red flag about the non-stop rugby marathon that's wearing out players and diluting fan excitement. He’s not just moaning about it over beers; he’s penned a fiery letter to SA Rugby demanding a grand old rethink of how things are done around here.

Strauss is pushing for a mega workshop with all the rugby bigwigs to tackle issues sprung from the shift to northern hemisphere competitions. Long story short, the local game is juggling more balls than a circus clown, dealing with a crammed schedule, iffy commercial appeal, and players running on fumes. He’s thrown down the gauntlet to address the ludicrous 12-month playing schedule that’s currently the norm for URC franchises and to find harmony with World Rugby’s new 30-match cap per player.

"Our local game has not taken the step forward like the Springboks, as evidenced by declining match attendance. Our clients are overwhelmed."

On the table for discussion is also the SA Cup format—single, one-and-a-half, or double round—anyone’s guess is as good as Strauss’s. He’s envisioning an SA Cup that’s not just another trophy but a magnet for sponsors and broadcasters. And let’s not forget about ensuring some stability in the Currie Cup Premier Division with guaranteed participation for teams over two years, while spicing up the First Division to draw in the moolah.

The domestic rugby calendar needs a facelift too, making sure it plays nice with the European Champions Cup, United Rugby Championship, Currie Cup, and all the junior and amateur festivities. Oh, and while they’re at it, why not boost women’s rugby with some fresh initiatives?

Responding to Strauss’s rally cry, SA Rugby president Mark Alexander called these issues “critical areas that warrant strategic alignment” and is slotting them into the agenda for the next presidents' forum, followed by a dedicated workshop.

So, as the rugby world turns in SA, it seems the game off the field is just as intense as on it. Rugby fans and players alike, keep your eyes peeled and your jerseys ready; changes might just be coming to a stadium near you.
