In the aftermath of the Vodacom Bulls clinching a home quarter-final in the Vodacom URC with a decisive 45-19 triumph over Benetton, the celebration is tempered by concerns over a potential injury to a pivotal player. Cameron Hanekom, the team’s dynamic No. 8, is slated for a foot scan following discomfort experienced during the match, casting a shadow over the victory.
Johan Ackermann, the Bulls' head coach, expressed apprehension regarding Hanekom's condition. "We have to scan on Monday and make sure it’s not serious because his foot is obviously sore now," Ackermann detailed. The decision to play Hanekom was made after he felt capable during pre-game assessments, a call that now hangs in balance as they await further medical evaluation.
"But he’s a bit sore now, so we just have to make sure there’s no damage."
The team, while basking in the glory of securing a top-four finish and a crucial home advantage in the playoffs, also has other injury worries. Ackermann noted minor concerns with other players. "Ruan [Nortjé] has a little ankle twist and Canan [Moodie] took a knock on the shoulder, but hopefully with the week off they’ll be fine," he optimistically stated.
Ackermann, while satisfied with the win and the strategic points gained, lamented the inconsistent moments that saw Benetton claw back into the game. "I thought we started well and that probably saved us," he admitted, before criticizing the team's lapses. "Then we started making silly mistakes and suddenly the momentum kept swinging."
"If you get momentum swings like that in a playoff game, you probably don’t recover. Those are the parts we have to fix."
The Bulls coach also voiced frustration with the refereeing, particularly during the scrums where he felt the Bulls showed clear dominance. "I felt the second half specifically was inconsistent," Ackermann said, emphasizing a scrum dominance that he believed was not adequately recognized by the match officials. "If that scrum from Wilco [Louw] isn’t dominance, then I don’t know what is. He was scrumming the guy all the way backwards."
As the Bulls prepare for the knockout stages, the blend of satisfaction with the win and concern for injured players sets a complex stage. The coming days will be crucial for the team's medical staff and coaching team to address these challenges head-on.
