Rassie Erasmus is all in on the belief that the Vodacom Bulls charging into the URC final is nothing but gold for the Springboks as they gear up for the upcoming international clashes. Despite the Bulls players missing out on early national camp training, Erasmus is banking on the high stakes experience to pay dividends.
“If the Bulls had fallen out two weeks ago, we’d have had them for longer,” Erasmus admitted. “But sometimes playing in a final, carrying momentum and confidence, is actually better.” It's clear that Erasmus values the grit and grind of high-pressure matches over a few extra practice sessions.
"Hopefully they beat Leinster, because that would be fantastic. But even if they don’t, they’ve played in a URC final and they’ll come back confident, fit and ready."
This optimistic outlook isn't just a shot in the dark. Erasmus is well aware that England, South Africa’s first opponent in the Nations Championship on July 4th at Ellis Park, faces a similar situation with their players in the Premiership playoffs. This shared circumstance suggests a level playing field, or so the Bok coach hopes.
Meanwhile, the Springbok camp isn't just about the present but also the future. The integration of Junior Boks and emerging talents into the training environment has caught Erasmus's eye. “When you look them in the eye and speak to them, you can see they understand professional rugby,” he noted. These young guns aren't just filling spaces; they're pushing for places.
The synergy between the national team, URC clubs, and the Junior Boks seems to be smoother than ever, thanks to the efforts of SA Rugby high-performance GM Dave Wessels and Junior Boks coach Kevin Foote. Erasmus highlighted their pivotal role in getting these players game-ready and well-versed in what it takes to step up to the international stage.
With fixtures against Zimbabwe for South Africa A and a match against the Barbarians on the horizon, some of these burgeoning stars will soon taste senior international rugby. “We’ll give some of them opportunities,” Erasmus confirmed, setting the stage for new heroes to emerge under his watchful guidance.
The Bulls’ showdown with Leinster in Dublin promises to be more than just a game. For Erasmus and the Springboks, it's a forge where the steel of future international victors is tempered and tested.
