In a candid post-match reflection, John Dobson acknowledged his Stormers squad was surpassed by a Cardiff team that simply hungered more for victory. Following a disheartening 22-16 defeat at Arms Park, the Stormers missed a crucial chance to secure home advantage for the upcoming playoff games, a setback that left Dobson visibly frustrated.
“A very disappointing performance,” Dobson admitted, giving credit to Cardiff’s fervent play.
"We give Cardiff all the credit they deserve – they were desperate – and I’m sorry that their desperation meant more to them than our chance to host a series of playoffs in Cape Town."
Highlighting the opposition's performance, he noted, “I thought their attack and defence was very good. They put us under pressure defensively, got yards on us, very clever attack and they were just really desperate.”The Stormers showed moments of superiority, especially in set pieces, yet consistently failed to capitalize on these advantages. This recurring issue of not converting opportunities into points was glaringly evident, similar to the previous week’s 38-38 draw with Ulster, where numerous scoring chances went unexploited.
“We had lots of areas of dominance and lots of opportunities that we probably wasted, very similar to last week,” Dobson reflected.
"Failure to convert when we were five metres out and the fact that we didn’t get a behaviour change there, is a problem for us."
Despite this setback, the Stormers still secure a spot in the top four, holding on to the possibility of a quarter-final on home soil. The road ahead demands significant improvement, as Dobson underlined the need for a strong comeback if they are to contend seriously for their second URC title. “We’re going to have to regroup,” he asserted. “We know what’s in this group and we’ll regroup quickly. We’re a very bruised team who were beaten by the better team on the night and we’ll have to do much better than this in the quarter-final.”
The Stormers' journey in the URC continues to be one of high stakes and high pressure, necessitating a quick turnaround if they are to realize their championship aspirations.
