In a recent turn of events, the Cheetahs will be playing without one of their key players, Munier Hartzenberg, for approximately nine months following a knee surgery. The 28-year-old centre, a pivotal member of the team, was taken off the field after sustaining an injury to his right knee during a rough tackle in the Friday game where the Cheetahs claimed a 43-21 victory over the Sharks XV in Bloemfontein.
Cheetahs coach Frans Steyn confirmed the surgery, which took place this past Tuesday. This marks another unfortunate interruption for Hartzenberg's career following a similar setback last year.
"Munier will definitely be missed, he’s a key guy in the backline at the moment. But we still have Skolie [Carel-Jan Coetzee], Jooste Nel and De-an Ackermann. It’s an opportunity for somebody else to put their hand up and show why they’re a Cheetah."
Despite the setback, Steyn is optimistic about the team's depth and the opportunities it presents for other players to step up. The Cheetahs have started the tournament strongly, winning their first two matches at home. They are set to face the defending champions, the Griquas, in Kimberley this coming Friday.
"It is a tough challenge, but hopefully the plan we’ve been working on will pay off for us on the day," said Steyn. "It will require total buy-in from everyone if we want to make progress in this competition."
Steyn also mentioned the team's preparation involved detailed video analysis and strategizing, aiming to exploit identified opportunities and carry forward their winning momentum.
