In a stunning display of resilience and tactical prowess, the Cheetahs staged an epic comeback to topple Georgia’s Black Lion with a 47-31 victory in their latest Toyota Challenge showdown in Bloemfontein. The clash, which saw the hosts reverse a daunting 17-point deficit, was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride that peaked with a thrilling second-half performance.

The match kicked off with the Cheetahs' winger Michael Annies slicing through the defense, scoring within the first two minutes after a slick assist by Cohen Jasper. However, the Black Lion quickly regrouped and responded fiercely. Giorgi Tsutskiridze and Roma Makhatadze muscled their way over the line for tries, complemented by the boot of Luka Tsirekidze, propelling the visitors to a 17-7 lead at halftime. Prop Davit Abdushelishvili extended that lead shortly after the break, signaling trouble for the home side.

The game's complexion changed dramatically following the dismissal of Black Lion captain Mikheil Babunashvili, who saw red for a high tackle on Annies. Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, the Cheetahs roared back with Ben Pitout and Marco Jansen van Vuren closing the gap before Munier Hartzenberg, celebrating his 50th cap, put them ahead with a dazzling try.

"It was a game of two halves, and discipline was key. The red card was definitely a turning point for us," remarked Cheetahs' coach post-match.

As the Black Lion’s discipline faltered, the Cheetahs found gaps and exploited them mercilessly. Flyhalf Jaco van der Walt and center Zander du Plessis piled on the points, stretching the lead out of the visitors' reach. Hartzenberg’s second try sealed the deal before Tornike Kakhoidze salvaged some pride for the Georgians with a late score.

Earlier, the day witnessed other emphatic wins, with the Griquas and Pumas dispatching their opponents with relative ease. The action underscored the fierce competition and high stakes of the Toyota Challenge.
