All Blacks icon Sir John Kirwan has fired a warning shot to the Springboks, suggesting they should be "shaking in their boots" with Dave Rennie taking the helm as New Zealand's head coach. Rennie, who previously managed the Wallabies, boasts a commanding 75% win rate against South Africa under Rassie Erasmus' watch. This statistic looms large as Rennie steps in to replace Scott Robertson, aiming to recalibrate the All Blacks ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Rennie's track record includes a stint with the Wallabies from 2020 to 2023, where despite a moderate overall success rate, he notably outmaneuvered the Springboks multiple times. His appointment has stirred expectations and strategic shifts within NZ Rugby, which expressed concerns about the team's direction under Robertson. As preparations for the World Cup heat up, the All Blacks are scheduled to clash with the Springboks in what promises to be a high-stakes encounter in the quarter-finals.

"Two things for you Victor: he’s got a very good win record against South Africa with Australia, so you guys should be shaking in your boots, and then I think the other thing we mentioned, which we’re all aware of, unless you guys throw a game, is we’re going to meet in the quarter-finals [of the World Cup],"

Kirwan remarked during the Rivals podcast, hinting at the inevitable showdown.

In addition to the tactical battles on the field, Rennie is also focusing on personnel strategies, attempting to lure All Blacks veteran Brodie Retallick back from retirement. Retallick, a key player in New Zealand's 2015 World Cup victory, could be a significant asset in Rennie's squad.

Beyond player strategy, Rennie is poised to reshape his coaching staff, emphasizing the need for trust and alignment in his team's philosophy. Echoing these sentiments, Boks legend Victor Matfield highlighted the importance of assembling a cohesive backroom team.

"He said one big thing and that’s, ‘I need people who I trust’. This is a hard job. What people don’t realise is it gets really creaky and you’ve got to be in the same trench together,"

Kirwan supported Matfield's view on the critical nature of reliable partnerships within the team.

As the All Blacks gear up under Rennie's leadership, the rugby world watches closely, anticipating how his strategic prowess will translate in the face of fierce international competition.
