Stormers' standout flanker Paul de Villiers has been thrust into the rugby big leagues with his recent induction into the Springbok camp, describing his initial experiences as nothing short of transformative. The 23-year-old, still green in his international jersey, has rapidly adapted to the high-octane environment of the world champions after a stellar season at the Stormers.
"It’s only been a week, but what a week it’s been—packed with learning," shared De Villiers from Johannesburg, where the Boks are ramping up for the international clashes ahead. The team is set to confront the Barbarians following a face-off between South Africa A and Zimbabwe at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium this Saturday.
"We’ve got outstanding players in the squad who I can learn from. We’ve also got players who are keen to share advice and knowledge with the newer guys. For me it’s the perfect scenario. We’ve got good coaches, good players and a great environment for learning."
When quizzed about the leap from his provincial team to the national squad, De Villiers highlighted the elevation in training intensity. "You’re competing against Springboks and against guys who want to be here. That lifts the intensity of a normal training session to another level. It's a senior environment and a national team, so naturally the standards and expectations are higher."
Despite the heightened expectations, De Villiers noted that newcomers are urged to stay faithful to the attributes that earned them their Springbok colors. "We’re sitting here because the coaches saw what we did for our franchises. They just expect us to keep doing that and work even harder."
While donning the green and gold has been a lifelong dream for De Villiers, his current prerogative is to deliver performances akin to those at the Stormers. "If I get an opportunity this weekend, it will be awesome, regardless of which team I play for. My focus isn’t on taking someone else’s role. It’s about continuing to do what got me here and working hard on the things I do well."
De Villiers is evidently eager to hit the field, whether against the Barbarians or Zimbabwe, committed to contributing to the system and shining for the team. His journey from a promising Stormers player to wearing the Springbok jersey encapsulates the dreams of budding rugby talents nationwide, now on the cusp of playing at the pinnacle of international rugby.
