Duane Vermeulen has expressed confidence in Evan Roos ahead of the upcoming Nations Championship match against Scotland, highlighting it as a prime opportunity for Roos to cement his place among the Springboks elite. With all eight of his previous Test appearances being off the bench, Roos will start the game, an occasion Vermeulen believes is ripe for making a significant impact.
Vermeulen commented on the importance of providing players with opportunities to showcase their abilities. "It’s Evan Roos’ opportunity to lift up his hand and say I’m also here, so this is probably a good game for him to show his worth and the impact he can have on the game," he stated.
"Obviously you want to give every single guy an opportunity to play."
The Springbok Mobi-Unit coach pointed out that Roos has been a key player at the club level, and there are high hopes he will bring the same level of performance to the national team. "If you look at Evan playing for the Stormers, he’s also their big go-to guy so hopefully he can step into that position and also get us some good go-forward," the coach noted, adding, "His energy on the pitch is massive, so we’d like to see a lot of that."
Despite facing some criticism over various aspects of his game, Roos has been working closely with the coaching team to refine his skills for the international stage. Vermeulen revealed, "He’s a fantastic player with a lot of energy and you can see what he does for the Stormers. But there’s a difference between playing URC and Test match rugby so hopefully we can get him there and he can produce the goods that we are actually looking for."
