In a bold move that's shaking up the rugby world, All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has unveiled a lineup sprinkled with fresh faces for the upcoming clash with France in Dunedin, featuring the Barrett brothers and a Dutch giant who’s walked straight out of a rugby fairytale.
Fabian Holland, the towering lock born in the Netherlands, headlines the group of uncapped players selected for this Saturday's game. Alongside him, making their thrilling entrance into the test arena are No. 8 Christian Lio-Willie, who will start, and reserves prop Ollie Norris and flanker Du’Plessis Kirifi. “This is a huge moment for these men and their families,” an excited Robertson shared, as they gear up for a grueling three-test series against Les Bleus.
The story of Holland is particularly stirring. From a small Dutch town to New Zealand’s rugby pitches, Holland’s journey began at age 11 when the All Blacks Sevens team visited his local club in Castricum. Fast forward to today, and he’s set to debut alongside stars like Rieko Ioane at Forsyth Barr Stadium, a ground he knows well from his days with the Highlanders.
"From Zeeland to New Zealand, he’s come a long way. It’s pretty single-minded for a 14-year-old to make that call to come over and represent another country in the game he loves. It’s movie sort of stuff, isn’t it?"
Adding to the local flavor, Lio-Willie, a standout from the Crusaders, returns to a familiar turf. Having shone in the Otago provincial team, he acknowledges the pivotal role his early coaches played. “The coach at the time, Ryan Martin, came up to Auckland when I was at school, at Massey High, and he’s the one that got me down here,” he recalls. With nearly 50 caps for Otago, Lio-Willie sees this as a full circle moment, especially sharing it with Holland, his Otago debut partner.
Steering the team as captain is lock Scott Barrett, with brother Beauden Barrett setting the pace at flyhalf, a nod over Damian McKenzie. Jordie Barrett will strengthen the midfield with Billy Proctor, while Rieko Ioane, usually seen in the centers for the Blues, will dazzle on the wing.
The All Blacks' formidable lineup is primed for a powerful display, promising a series filled with high-octane rugby as they face off against France in Dunedin, Wellington, and Hamilton. Fans are buckling up for a thrilling ride as the new blood mixes with seasoned warriors in what’s shaping up to be a spectacular series.
