Eddie Jones, the outspoken rugby coach currently heading Japan, has unleashed a scathing critique on New Zealand Rugby's decision to dismiss Scott Robertson, suggesting a significant influence of player power in the process. Reports indicated that Ardie Savea may have spearheaded a player revolt, leading to Robertson's ousting, although NZ Rugby chair David Kirk and several players have denied these allegations.
Jones expressed his disappointment over how the union managed the situation, arguing that they should have given Robertson more time to correct the course rather than hastily accepting player criticisms. "When you take everything at face value without giving time for the coach to address the issues, you're not solving anything," Jones remarked on the DSPN podcast with Martin Devlin.

"I remember inheriting a fractured squad in England. There were cliques and constant complaints. It's something that eats away at a team's spirit," he recalled.
Jones also criticized the trend of boards leaking survey results about team management, labeling it as "weak as water." He advocates for using player feedback constructively rather than allowing it to undermine coaching authority publicly. "Gather the survey, sure, but then engage in a meaningful dialogue with the coach. Don’t just throw him under the bus with it," he advised.
