Edwill van der Merwe has expressed his appreciation for the Springboks' team-first ethos, which ensures that every player is primed for action when their moment arrives. This Saturday, he will join forces with Aphelele Fassi and Canan Moodie in the back three for the Nations Championship showdown against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld.
According to van der Merwe, the coaching staff's efforts to foster a focused and supportive environment have been pivotal. "The coaching staff have created a culture where you know exactly what the plans are and where you fit into them," he explained. This clarity and emphasis on collective success over individual accolades help maintain high morale and readiness among the players.
"Everyone knows the team always comes first. If you’re not playing, there’s no real time to feel sorry for yourself because you focus on what you can do to help the team. You then wait until you get your opportunity, and when it comes, you have to grab it with both hands."
Van der Merwe is set to make his first Test appearance at Loftus, a moment he has been eagerly anticipating. "I’m really looking forward to it because it will be my first Test for the Springboks at Loftus," he said, acknowledging the depth of talent within the squad and the privilege of being selected to represent his country.
Competition within the Springbok camp remains intense, especially among the back three, with notable players like Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse also vying for starting positions. This competitive environment not only pushes each player to improve but also ensures that everyone remains sharp and engaged.
Van der Merwe also highlighted the supportive nature of his teammates, particularly Kolbe and Arendse, who have played a significant role in his preparation for the upcoming match. "Cheslin and Kurt-Lee have especially helped me this week," he noted, underscoring the camaraderie that underpins their collective efforts.
The atmosphere within the team is one of mutual support and shared goals, with each member contributing to the broader objective of team success, whether they are on the field or supporting from the sidelines. This philosophy not only prepares players for individual moments of opportunity but also fortifies the team's overall cohesion and resilience.
