Jamie George, the stand-in captain for England's rugby team, asserts that emulating Henry Pollock’s unshakeable self-confidence is crucial as they prepare to clash with the Springboks at Ellis Park this Saturday. Pollock, the young and audacious loose forward, has rapidly become the antagonist in the eyes of many Bok supporters, due to his brash confidence and provocative social media antics ahead of his debut against the world champions.

George believes that Pollock’s brazen attitude is precisely what England requires as they head into the Nations Championship. “Yeah, bring it on,” George proclaims, his enthusiasm evident. “I love Henry Pollock. Honestly I think he is a brilliant guy. The way that his brain works, I would love to live in his head for 10 minutes.”

“He encapsulates what the mindset of this team needs to be: let’s go out there, let’s back ourselves.”

History isn’t on England’s side, with a daunting track record at Ellis Park where they’ve secured a lone victory. George, one of the few players with prior experience at the venue, anticipates a formidable challenge. “I have no doubt that it is going to be as hostile as it gets,” he said, fully aware of the pressure. Despite the intimidating reputation of the Springboks, George’s resolve is clear: “But is it not an obvious statement that we want to come here and win? Is it not an obvious statement we back ourselves to come here and win?”

Reflecting on a previous encounter in 2018 where England initially led but ultimately succumbed to a Bok comeback, George admitted, “I don’t think we prepped too well with regards to [altitude].” This time, however, the team has acclimated to the conditions, aiming to overturn their fortunes.

With a fresh strategy under coach Steve Borthwick, England is looking to shake off their Six Nations slump by injecting more dynamism into their play style. “You just get the sense in this team there is a lot of excitement around our attack, a lot of excitement about what we can do with the ball,” George shared. Borthwick’s philosophy encourages bold and courageous play: “Steve wants us to be able to do that. He is very encouraging for us to go out there and make the decision and throw the offload and be brave and play with courage.”

“Those are 100% the messages we have had.”

As the match approaches, the blend of Pollock’s audacious spirit and Borthwick’s tactical freedom could be the catalyst England needs to challenge the dominance of the Springboks and start their championship campaign on a high note.
