Steve Borthwick, the head coach of England's rugby team, is on the verge of securing a new contract with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) that would extend his tenure until the 2028 Six Nations. Borthwick, who assumed leadership from Eddie Jones in 2022, currently has a contract that expires after next year’s World Cup. This decision by the RFU follows a similar approach taken with Red Roses head coach John Mitchell, whose contract was also extended past the World Cup, culminating in a long-term agreement following a victorious campaign at the global tournament earlier in the year.
Despite a challenging year marked by England's poorest performance in a Six Nations championship, Borthwick received the endorsement of RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney. Sweeney's support is a strong backing for Borthwick to lead England in upcoming international fixtures and through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
“You don’t want them looking for a job going into [a World Cup],”
explained RFU performance director Connor O’Shea during an interview with BBC Five Live’s Rugby Union Weekly podcast. O’Shea highlighted the importance of having a stable coaching team entering a major tournament like the World Cup, noting that removing uncertainties can enhance focus and preparation.
Following a tough season, England's rugby team saw a return to form with consecutive victories over Fiji and Argentina in July. These wins have been critical in rebuilding the team's confidence and momentum as they gear up for more rigorous challenges ahead.
“I see in Steve someone who bleeds England, and wants England to succeed more than anything you can imagine.”
O’Shea added, emphasizing Borthwick's deep commitment to the team. His belief in the squad's potential is unwavering, with O'Shea affirming, “This England team is unequivocally one of probably five teams who can win the World Cup next year. If over this next 12 months this England team shows the best version of itself, I know it can beat anyone in the world.”
