In a bold move that's stirring up the rugby world, England coach Steve Borthwick has called up South African sensation Benhard Janse van Rensburg to his 42-man training group for the upcoming Nations Championship tour. The Bristol Bears centre, a former Junior Springbok, officially becomes eligible to play for England on July 8, missing the clash against South Africa on July 4 but potentially debuting in the Fiji match a week later.
Janse van Rensburg's selection is not without its controversies. The 29-year-old, who switched allegiances to England through residency after a five-year stint with London Irish, required a special nod from World Rugby due to a previous 21-minute game for the SA U20 team in 2016. Under old rules, this brief appearance would have locked him to South Africa, but the RFU successfully contested that such a short stint shouldn't bar him from playing for England based on residency.
"This move opens up new possibilities for Benhard and our team," remarked Borthwick.
Despite the potential uproar, Janse van Rensburg has been preferred over domestic talents like Bath's Ollie Lawrence and Max Ojomoh, signaling England's serious intent to bolster what has been a problematic centre position. Also getting the nod for the first time are Northampton's Archie McParland, Saracens' Charlie Bracken, and Leicester's Adam Radwan, alongside Bath forwards Vilikesa Sela and Kepu Tuipulotu.
The full England squad brimming with both seasoned internationals and fresh faces is as follows:
