The recent Argentina v England rugby clash, victorious for England with a 2-0 series win, spiraled into controversy as racist chants from the crowd targeted English players. World Rugby has stepped in, confirming that a racism complaint was lodged by England Rugby, and immediate action including an exhaustive investigation has been initiated.

During the game on July 12 in San Juan, the triumph of Steve Borthwick's squad was overshadowed by discriminatory abuse from certain Argentina spectators. The gravity of the situation prompted World Rugby to respond quickly, expressing deep regret that the culprits went unidentified despite rigorous efforts. "There is no place in rugby or society for discrimination, abuse or hate speech," World Rugby stated, stressing the seriousness with which they treat such allegations.

"We offer our full support to the players involved and want them to know that rugby stands with them in opposing racism,"

declared Brett Robinson, Chair of World Rugby. He praised the players' bravery in confronting such a distressing scenario and reiterated the sport’s commitment to fighting hate.

England Rugby CEO Bill Sweeney voiced a strong stance against racism: "There is absolutely no place for racism in our sport – or in any society – and these incidents must be condemned in the strongest possible terms." He assured that the affected players have the full backing of the organization, appreciating the swift actions of World Rugby and UAR in addressing the issue.

From the Argentine side, Gabriel Travaglini, President of the Unión Argentina de Rugby, condemned the racist acts and expressed solidarity with the aggrieved England players. Despite efforts to pinpoint the offenders in a crowd exceeding 20,000, identification was unachievable. Travaglini confirmed ongoing cooperation with World Rugby to better educate fans and prevent future occurrences of such unacceptable behavior, aiming to make rugby events a space of respect and inclusion.

This incident not only casts a shadow over a sport known for its values of unity and respect but also serves as a critical reminder of the vigilance needed to combat racism actively in sports and wider society. The rugby community stands united in its commitment to eradicate discrimination and ensure a welcoming environment for all athletes and fans alike.
