Erasmus Admits: Not the Strongest Springboks Team

In a candid revelation, Rassie Erasmus, the head coach of the Springboks, has declared that the squad lined up for the upcoming clash against Argentina is far from the strongest he could have assembled. Despite retaining the core of the team for the third straight Rugby Championship game, Erasmus is clear that circumstances, not choice, have shaped his selection.

The Springboks' team sheet for their match at the Allianz Stadium in Twickenham shows four tweaks compared to their previous game in Durban. Ox Nche makes a return to the starting lineup after missing last week due to a minor injury. The bench sees Jesse Kriel stepping in for Andre Esterhuizen, Bongi Mbonambi replacing Marco van Staden, and Grant Williams taking over from Morne van den Berg after recovering from a niggle.

Following a mixed tournament performance, including a commanding 43-10 victory over New Zealand, Erasmus has been forced to maintain a similar lineup, primarily due to injury-induced changes rather than strategic preference. The challenges of a tight schedule and limited training opportunities in London have compounded the situation.

"No, no, definitely not,"

Erasmus responded when asked if this was the optimal team he could field. "We just have two days of training, and we only arrived on Monday... So no, this is definitely not our strongest team."

The constraints of the tight schedule were evident as Erasmus explained, "Yeah, we didn’t train yesterday because we only arrived then, so we moved the policy to Tuesday." He elaborated on the fitness of his players, noting that besides Ox's week-long recovery, other players like Damian Willemse and Cheslin Kolbe are back after overcoming minor health scares.

With the Rugby Championship title within grasp, the Boks know a bonus-point win over Argentina could seal the deal. Eben Etzebeth, familiar with the Twickenham turf, recalled both fond and challenging memories at the venue but looked forward to the matchup, appreciating the shorter travel compared to Argentina.

"Always a great stadium to play at, lots of South Africans in London. So it will be a great game, great to play and obviously a shorter trip than to go to Argentina, which is a small positive for us," Etzebeth noted.

The Wallabies and the All Blacks will square off earlier that day in Perth, setting the stage for what the Springboks need to accomplish to clinch the championship.

Springboks team: Starting XV: Ox Nche and others. Bench: Jesse Kriel, Bongi Mbonambi, Grant Williams.
