In a bold tactical reshuffle, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has positioned team captain Siya Kolisi at number eight for the upcoming Rugby Championship clash against the Wallabies. This marks a significant shift for Kolisi, who traditionally plays as a flanker but will now debut at the base of the scrum.
Kolisi is no stranger to the number eight spot, having honed his skills there during the Sharks' latest United Rugby Championship season. His move comes as a strategic decision by Erasmus, who is adapting to the absence of Jasper Wiese due to suspension, along with the long-term unavailability of Cameron Hanekom and Elrigh Louw. While Jean-Luc du Preez and Cobus Wiese were potential fill-ins, Erasmus has entrusted his captain with the role.
Erasmus explains the rationale behind this switch, emphasizing the dynamics of general play over set-piece engagements.
"We actually changed our mind there. The more we practised we realized that the only position the guy plays at eight is at scrums, which happens maybe 13 or 14 times a game. General play is probably what happens most and having guys like Pieter, Marco, and Siya on the field we really feel Australia is a threat at the breakdown. They really fight hard at the breakdown, and those guys clean out well at the breakdown and we feel we are going to need that."
The Springboks lineup will see Grant Williams and Manie Libbok steering the game at the half-back positions. This choice, along with Kolisi's positional change, signals a calculated approach by Erasmus who remains flexible with his bench strategy. The traditional 5-3 split could shift depending on the Wallabies' team selection.
Erasmus also touched on the strategic timing of the squad announcement: "It is to get the speculation out of the way. You guys can now speculate about the team that is playing. The team knows already who is playing so getting this out of the way we can just focus on really training well and preparing." This preemptive move aims to stabilize team focus and counter strategic leaks ahead of the crucial match.
With these adjustments and tactical nuances, the Springboks are gearing up for a significant test against the Wallabies, showcasing a blend of seasoned strategies and fresh tactical gambits under Erasmus's stewardship.
