David Moffett, the former chief of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), isn't holding back his thoughts on current WRU CEO Abi Tierney's fit for the rough and tumble world of sports management. Moffett, whose tenure at WRU spanned from 2003 to 2005, unleashed his latest commentary following a personal experience that indirectly involved Tierney’s past administrative role.

Moffett took to LinkedIn with a post that initially seemed to applaud Tierney, under whose watch he had a surprisingly smooth experience renewing his UK passport. "I have been critical of WRU CEO Abi Tierney from time to time," Moffett admitted, "I do think she has stepped into a world that she was unprepared for." Despite the commendation on the passport process, he quickly shifted gears to a more critical tone concerning her current role.

"A whole different animal..."

"The reality was so much different. My passport consultant Saretha has been amazing, and my new passport is already on its way," Moffett recounted. He extended kudos to Tierney for her previous role as director general of HM Passport Office and UK Visas and Immigration, highlighting the exemplary customer service. Yet, he couldn't help but segue into a critique, suggesting that while Tierney excelled in her previous government role, the unique challenges of sports administration might not be her forte.

"We all have a purpose in life, and I can't help thinking that she is best suited to the type of role she had prior to WRU. Working in sports administration is a whole different animal, and there is a very steep learning curve. It’s not for everyone," Moffett articulated.

Furthermore, Moffett also shared news of his recent appointment to the board of the House of Luxury Group, which has taken a significant stake in the Scarlets rugby team. "I am honoured to be part of her awesome team, and we should start to see some positive results in weeks, not months," he conveyed, full of optimism for the future of Welsh rugby under new management.

This juxtaposition of Tierney’s past accomplishments against the starkly different demands of sports management underscores a broader debate about the skill sets required for leadership in various fields—a debate Moffett seems keen on stirring in the realm of rugby.
