When the Springboks face the Wallabies in Cape Town this Saturday, all eyes will be on Aphelele Fassi, who steps in for the sidelined Willie le Roux. Springbok captain Jesse Kriel and assistant coach Mzwandile Stick have thrown their full support behind Fassi's capabilities to shine in the looming Rugby Championship Test.

The Boks made a last-minute lineup change as Willie le Roux, affected by a groin issue, made way for Fassi. This shuffle follows a reshaping of the team by coach Rassie Erasmus, who revamped the starting XV after a previous loss where the team squandered a 22-0 lead, tumbling in global rankings.

"It's unfortunate that Willie picked up a niggle this week in training," remarked Kriel. "But he’s been mentoring Fassi, and we all recognize Fassi's talent, so I’m confident he’ll perform admirably."

"Obviously, it’s disappointing for Willie, I know how much he wanted to play in Cape Town with his family here. But I have no doubt Fassi will step up, like he has over the last few years."

Stick elaborated on the situation, indicating that the team's preparations remained unaffected despite the late change. "It’s a big loss – Willie is a seasoned player. However, Fassi is up to the task," Stick explained. He also emphasized the smooth transition, "He played last week, so there’s continuity, and he knows exactly how we want to operate."

The assistant coach also praised Le Roux for his decision to step down this game, acknowledging his honesty and respect for the team's dynamics, especially given the strategic 6-2 bench split planned for the match. "That shows the character of who he is and how much he respects the team. We’re excited to see what Fassi can do," Stick added.

"We definitely know what we didn’t get right last weekend and we’ve rectified that as a team,"

Kriel shared, expressing optimism about the upcoming game. "The great thing about this sport is you get another chance. Luckily, we’ve got that chance tomorrow."

Stick reflected on the emotional impact of their previous defeat. "It felt like a funeral at Ellis Park – the people were heartbroken. We play for the people of South Africa, and we could feel their disappointment," he said, promising efforts to rejuvenate spirits in Cape Town.

The Springboks are set to play Australia in what promises to be a thrilling encounter, with the team determined to reclaim their standing and prep for upcoming challenges against the All Blacks in New Zealand.
