Hold onto your hats, rugby fans! The Western Force has just made a power move by snagging none other than ex-All Black sensation George Bridge. This 30-year-old, who sprinted along the sidelines in the 2019 World Cup quarter-final against Ireland, is setting his sights on the Aussie shores, leaving behind his recent French escapades with Montpellier for sunny Perth.
Bridge, a key figure in the Crusaders' lineup from 2017 to 2022, boasts a trophy cabinet bursting with Super Rugby titles, and a track record of 82 appearances no less. His journey took a detour to France's Top 14 in 2022 following a mix of pandemic disruptions and a crowded All Black backline featuring the likes of Caleb Clarke. Over in Montpellier, Bridge wasn't just warming the bench; he was a fixture in the starting lineup, making his mark in 33 of his 39 appearances.
Despite the lure of returning to New Zealand, where several franchises were practically tripping over themselves to get him, Bridge chose a different path.
"They're a club heading in the right direction and I'm keen to take on the new challenge and contribute to the club’s success,"
Bridge remarked, signaling his enthusiasm for his new club.Force coach Simon Cron couldn't hide his excitement about the new recruit:
"He’s a brilliant player. An amazing talent. He’s got a massive left boot, can play multiple positions, and will bring serious depth as we push for finals rugby,"
gushed Cron. Clearly, the Force isn't just playing to participate; they're playing to win.Bridge also hinted at personal reasons for the move. His existing connections in Perth and alignment with the Force's ambitious vision seemed to seal the deal. "I’ve always loved my time in Perth, and with friends and good connections among the staff and players, it just made sense," he shared, highlighting the blend of professional and personal factors influencing his decision.
With Bridge's arrival, it's clear that Australian rugby is on a mission to bolster its squads with seasoned international players as the 2027 World Cup looms on the horizon. This strategic move by the Western Force could very well be a game-changer as they aim for a spot at the top.
