Wallabies legend Michael Hooper has thrown down the gauntlet, urging head coach Joe Schmidt to shake things up drastically for the upcoming second Test against the British and Irish Lions. After a narrow loss in the opening match, where Australia’s performance was less than stellar, Hooper's strategic insights could just be the catalyst for a much-needed revival.

Despite the Wallabies being pinned as underdogs and trailing significantly in the first half, they managed a spirited comeback, only to fall short at 27-19. Hooper, however, has zeroed in on the team's lineup, advocating for a tactical overhaul, particularly in the backline, while keeping the halfback pairing of Jake Gordon and Tate McDermott intact. Hooper praised McDermott's impact off the bench, stating on Stan Sport’s Between Two Posts,

"Tate’s skillset is around seeing opportunity, his run game, and it played perfectly to his strengths."

The real shuffle, according to Hooper, needs to happen further out. He proposes Hunter Paisami to take the inside centre position, pushing Len Ikitau to outside centre and slotting the dynamic Joseph Suaalii onto the wing. This shift aims to exploit Suaalii's aerial prowess and pace, which were evident in the first Test.

"You’re playing Len at his best spot, which is 13, where he plays all year,"

Hooper elaborated, underscoring the strategy to maximize player strengths.

In addition to the backline, Hooper believes the forward pack needs rejuvenation. He specifically pointed out Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, who has shown his mettle in previous outings against the Lions, as a key inclusion. "I’d have him, I’d really like him as a number 6 if not starting in the second row. He can call lineouts," Hooper remarked, emphasizing the need for Salakaia-Loto’s aggressive presence in the lineup.

With the second Test looming, these suggested changes by a former captain highlight a crucial pivot point for the Wallabies. The return of key players like Will Skelton, Rob Valetini, and Dave Porecki, all recovering from injuries, could also bolster the squad as Schmidt finalizes his team. This mix of tactical shifts and returning talent might just be the recipe that Australia needs to level the series against the formidable Lions.
