Jack Willis, the stalwart of Toulouse and former England flanker, recently opened up about his contentment with his career decisions, debunking the swirling rumors of a potential switch to playing for Ireland. In a heartfelt discussion on the 'For The Love Of Rugby' show alongside former England teammates Ben Youngs and Dan Cole, Willis delved into his career trajectory, his life in France, and the personal growth that has accompanied his journey.

Reflecting on his international career, Willis expressed a mixed sense of nostalgia and acceptance. "There will always be part of me that will look back thinking I had more in me from an international point of view. I don’t regret my decision to stay here," Willis stated. His move to Toulouse was not originally planned, but following the unexpected dissolution of Wasps in 2022, it became a pivotal moment in his career. Despite the RFU’s restrictions on selecting non-PREM-based players, which ultimately sealed his fate regarding England selection, Willis has embraced his new chapter in the Top 14.

"But I have grown as a person and as a player, I think I could offer more now, but I also fully accept that when I re-signed this longer-term contract, I understood what came with that from an international perspective and you have got to make peace with that, why you are not getting in at that moment."

The topic of potentially donning the Irish green was also put to rest by Willis, who clarified his eligibility but underscored the impracticality due to similar national selection rules as England's. "I am quarter Irish," he noted, adding, "but you know, if it involves moving, then that sort of puts me in the same situation as it would for England; it’s the same rule."

Life in Toulouse has been enriching for Willis, who candidly discussed not only the financial aspects but also the camaraderie and the unique characters in the locker room. From the world-class potential coach in Thomas Ramos to the awe-inspiring skills of Peato Mauvaka, whom Willis likened to Spiderman, the team dynamics are a significant part of his experience. "The most skilful person ever... you sort of kick or throw any ball at him and he’ll just pluck it out with one hand," Willis praised Mauvaka.

He also highlighted the humility and hard work of Antoine Dupont, describing him as a humble individual who doesn’t seek the spotlight despite his superstar status. Meanwhile, Joel Merkler earned Willis's description as "the scariest but nicest bloke at the same time," a testament to the complex personalities that enrich the world of rugby.

Through his reflections, Willis not only sheds light on his personal and professional growth but also paints a vivid picture of life at Toulouse, capturing the essence of rugby's enduring impact on those who play it and love it.
