Jackman Praises NZ's Timely Rennie Appointment
Bernard Jackman recently shed light on the contrasting approaches New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and Rugby Australia (RA) adopted in their head coach succession planning. He commends NZR's strategy in timing Dave Rennie's appointment as head coach of the All Blacks, suggesting it was superior to RA's management of their coaching transition.

In a pivotal move earlier this year, NZR appointed Dave Rennie as the All Blacks' head coach, taking over from Scott Robertson. Rennie wrapped up his tenure with Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan's Rugby League One before beginning his journey with the All Blacks during the Nations Championship.

Under Rennie's leadership, the All Blacks have kicked off their campaign with promising wins against France and Italy. They are now poised to face Ireland at Eden Park. Bernard Jackman, a former Ireland hooker, noted NZR's effective timing in integrating Rennie into the team.

"Obviously you’re used to incredibly high standards (in New Zealand), but I think there’s enough in this team and the coaching staff that Rennie’s put in and the time, I think the timing (of his appointment) is massive."

Conversely, RA announced Les Kiss as the new head coach for the Wallabies in April 2025 but decided he would only assume the role post-Joe Schmidt's tenure, following the ongoing Nations Championship. This decision has coincided with consecutive losses for Australia against Ireland and France, and Jackman believes this delay has cost the team valuable preparation time under Kiss.

The contrast in outcomes between the two teams has been stark, with New Zealand looking robust and Australia appearing unsettled. Jackman expressed his views on what he deemed a missed opportunity for Rugby Australia to allow Kiss to lead earlier, bringing his new strategies to the fore.

"Joe Schmidt’s a phenomenal coach, but I think Rennie, it’s a narrow enough countdown to the World Cup. And I think getting started when he did is just the right amount of time. Any less would be pretty tight."

Jackman holds Rennie in high regard, impressed by the All Blacks' performance against capable opponents. Despite France not fielding their top players, the challenge was considerable, and Italy's surprising strength in this year's Six Nations has only added to the All Blacks' test.

So far, the All Blacks have shown resilience and tactical intelligence under Rennie's guidance, who is known for his dynamic coaching style. Jackman recalls Rennie’s previous tenures at the Chiefs and Glasgow, highlighting a distinct style of play that is becoming evident in this New Zealand squad.

As the rugby world continues to observe these developments, it's clear that the effective timing of coaching transitions can profoundly impact team performance and morale. The All Blacks seem to be on the right track with Rennie, while the Wallabies might face more hurdles as they adjust to a new coaching paradigm under Kiss.
