Jake White is raising some pointed questions about how much effort goes into defining and maximizing the roles of reserve players on the Springbok bench, notoriously known as the Bomb Squad. Ahead of Saturday's decisive match in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Rassie Erasmus has opted for a strategic 6-2 split in the squad composition.
The selection includes Cobus Reinach (16) and Manie Libbok (17) alongside Deon Fourie (18), Gerhard Steenekamp (19), Thomas du Toit (20), Lood de Jager (21), André Esterhuizen (22), and Cameron Hanekom (23). A victory in this match would clinch a series win for the Springboks with a 3-1 lead.
White, a former coach for the Boks and Vodacom Bulls, noted in his RugbyPass column that he witnessed the All Blacks losing their edge in the final 20 minutes during the third Test. He speculates this may be due to their substitution strategy.
“The bench can close out a game, protect or chase a lead, or introduce fresh power collectively,”
White highlighted the contrast between New Zealand’s substitution strategy and Erasmus' use of the Bomb Squad. He emphasized there is no one-size-fits-all approach to deploying replacements; rather, it’s vital they are mentally geared and clear on their expected contributions.
White is skeptical about whether the average rugby fan fully grasps the concept and significance of the Bomb Squad. He remarked on the iconic image of brawny players joining the game midway, a sight familiar in South Africa.
However, White believes there’s a deficiency in coaching focus when it comes to this aspect of the game.
“The magic isn’t just going to happen, and I’d love to see how much onus goes on behind closed doors on that aspect of the game.”
His comments underline an essential element of rugby strategy often overlooked by spectators—the tactical employment of the bench, which can effectively turn the tide of a game. As the Springboks head into a critical match, the effectiveness of the Bomb Squad could indeed prove to be a decisive factor.
