As the current rugby season winds down, the Leicester Tigers are set to bid farewell to two of their Wallaby stars, James O'Connor and Izaia Perese. O'Connor, who joined the Tigers this season from the Crusaders, has been a pivotal part of the team, even as he contemplates a return to Australia or possibly joining South Africa's Sharks. Perese, also an influential center for the Tigers since last season, leaves a strong legacy having helped the team to significant victories.
O'Connor, 35, has enjoyed a notable stint with the Tigers, marked by a victory in the PREM Rugby Cup Final against Exeter Chiefs. Reflecting on his time at the club, O'Connor expressed his gratitude, "Firstly, I’d like to thank the Tigers fans, truly has been an awesome experience playing in front of a packed out Mattioli Woods Welford Road." He remains focused on the remainder of the season, asserting, "But for now, my eyes are still firmly on the business end of this season. I truly feel this group can go all the way and I’m eager to help us achieve this goal."
"To my teammates, coaches and the organisation. Thank you for welcoming us into your family and making the transition back North seamless."
Geoff Parling, the head coach of the Tigers, praised O'Connor's influence, "It was great to get Rabs (James O'Connor) with us, and he has been brilliant in bringing an experienced, calming influence to our group of backs. Even as opportunities on the field became sparse, his impact off the pitch, particularly in mentorship and coaching, has been substantial."
Similarly, Izaia Perese, who will also leave at the season's end, has made 27 appearances and was instrumental in the team's recent successes. Perese shared his thoughts, "I’ll miss this group and I’m proud to have been a part of it. There’s still a job to be done, though, and I’m fully committed to what’s ahead. To the incredible fans, thank you for the unwavering support. It’s been an honour to represent this club."
"Izzy has offered some great moments in big games and applies himself diligently during training,"
noted Parling, adding, "His carry being so impactful, his defensive work at 13 goes unheralded. Izzy will always be part of the Leicester Tigers, and we wish him and his family all the best for the future."This transitional phase for the Tigers highlights not just the end of an era but also the enduring spirit of rugby, where every player, regardless of tenure, leaves a lasting imprint on the fabric of the club.
