Jamie George Warns of Walk-off Over Racism

With the Nations Championship clash against Argentina on the horizon, England's captain Jamie George has indicated the team might consider leaving the field if they encounter racial abuse during the match. This statement came during a press conference before the game in Santiago del Estero, marking the end of the tournament's first leg.

The issue of racial abuse is not new to England’s rugby scene. Last year, during a match in San Juan against Los Pumas, England players Asher Opoku-Fordjour and Chandler Cunningham-South were subjected to such abuses. This has clearly left a lasting impression on the team and especially on George.

"It’s something being considered," he said. "If anything like that happened then it deserves the strongest of reactions. There is no place for that in the world and I feel incredibly strongly about that."

In light of these incidents, George discussed the broader implications and the team's preparedness to tackle such unacceptable behaviors. He conveyed the depth of discussions within the team about possible responses to any future racial attacks.

As a part of their proactive strategy, George highlighted the initial steps the team would take if faced with a similar situation again.

"The first thing we’d do is make the referee aware of what we’ve seen so it can be properly logged and all the protocols can go into play. What we do outside of that we’re still deciding."

On a personal note, George recalled the abuse incident with a heavy heart, emphasizing his commitment to his teammates and the unity within the squad.

"It’s something I will remember for the rest of my life when I heard what had happened – and it wasn’t directed at me," he expressed. "It was directed at my teammates and I care about my teammates more than anything."

The captain also mentioned ongoing discussions aimed at developing a comprehensive response plan, involving a diverse group of players to represent various perspectives within the team.

This proactive approach reflects the seriousness with which England’s rugby team is addressing the issue of racism, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination. As the team prepares for their upcoming match against Argentina, it is clear that they are not only strategizing for the game on the field but also for maintaining the sport’s integrity and inclusivity off the field.

With this mindset, England steps into the match against Argentina, hoping for a contest marked by sportsmanship and respect, laying the groundwork for a strong and united stance against any forms of racial abuse in sports.
