Duane Vermeulen is buzzing about Jasper Wiese's return to the Springbok squad after a four-game timeout due to suspension. Just in time for the Rugby Championship sizzler against the All Blacks in Wellington, Wiese is back wearing the No 8 jersey, ready to smash through the New Zealand defense with his bulldozer-like vigor.

“It’s great to have him back in the mix,” Vermeulen shared with reporters on Tuesday. “He’s one of the guys who really gives us go-forward, so we’ll see what he brings to the game.” With Wiese's role crucial in linking the bruising forward pack with the slick backline, his comeback is viewed as a key ingredient in spicing up the Bok’s game plan.

"The No 8 is the link between the forward pack and backline, and I believe we selected an exciting backline, so I’m looking forward to seeing what Jasper brings to the party.”

While Wiese was sidelined, the Boks had to shuffle their pack. Siya Kolisi stepped into the No 8 boots, showing resilience and adaptability with Kwagga Smith jumping in to add some late-game dynamism. Rassie Erasmus, never one to mince his words, was clearly thrilled at Monday’s team announcement, declaring Wiese as one of the team’s "biggest weapons."

"Siya did a really, really good job last weekend. Kwagga does well when he comes on and now having Jasper back is obviously a massive plus," Erasmus elaborated.

"I can probably just talk about the environment, but there are a couple of guys who are still playing when I played, and all the coaches also give their input, so I don’t really work a lot with that side of things."

Vermeulen, who hung up his boots after the 2023 World Cup and transitioned into a coaching role, prefers to focus on environmental factors rather than tactical nuances, leaving the finer strategic details to his fellow coaches. This weekend’s clash will test the mettle of the Boks as they face the All Blacks, a team against whom many battles have been etched into rugby folklore.

With the stage set in Wellington, the return of Jasper Wiese is not just a boost for the Springboks' lineup but a signal that the Boks are gearing up for a showdown that promises to keep rugby fans on the edge of their seats.
