Jaydon Viljoen shone brightly as he scored 21 points, propelling the SA U18 A team to a thunderous victory against France U18. The match, held at Stellenberg High School, showcased the host's dominance, ending with a scoreline of 51-26. This win capped off an undefeated streak in the U18 International Series, following earlier triumphs over Ireland and Georgia.
The match began with the South Africans displaying formidable early game momentum. By the mid-point of the first half, they had already built a substantial 21-0 lead. Linakho Mehlomakulu, Max Malan, and Lucritia Magau each notched a try, with Viljoen expertly converting each attempt.
The French team mounted a strong comeback, delivering three converted tries courtesy of Philippe Roudaut, Sacha Codorniou, and Arthur Noel. Their flyhalf, Jehlani Trillon, successfully converted all three, bringing the score to a close 27-21 by halftime. Despite this, Viljoen widened the gap with a penalty and a drop goal, keeping the hosts ahead.
"We knew we had the resilience and skill to maintain our lead. It was just about executing our game plan," Viljoen commented on their first-half performance.
After halftime, the SA U18s surged forward with renewed vigor. Viljoen himself darted through for a try, followed swiftly by Thomas Saunders, who completed a long-range effort. Both tries were converted, stretching their lead further to 41-21.
The South African dominance continued as replacement scrumhalf Rufagon Hendricks dashed through to score, putting the game well beyond reach. Although France scored a late try through Aubin Richerol, it was Ruan Genis who had the final say with a climactic seventh try for South Africa, sealing a comprehensive victory.
"It's a fantastic feeling to finish the series unbeaten. Every player stepped up when it mattered most," reflected a jubilant Viljoen post-match.
