In a move that mirrors tactics used by Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus, Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has hinted at a possible last-minute shuffle in his team's lineup ahead of their upcoming clash. Originally forced to revise his team due to Ben Donaldson's untimely injury, Schmidt's strategic ambiguity keeps everyone guessing if further changes are on the horizon.

Earlier in the week, Erasmus suggested he might adjust his bench to include lock RG Snyman, thus altering the usual backline reserves in anticipation of Australia's tactics. Schmidt, facing a similar scenario, brought in Nick Champion de Crespigny, a promising newcomer from Western Force, to replace Donaldson. Speaking on the matter, Schmidt conveyed the fluid nature of his decision-making process,

"Our original split was 5:3, but with Ben Donaldson pulling out right at the end of today's training, we've had to adapt. We have a lot of faith in Nick Champion de Crespigny; he had a very good game in the first Test against the British and Irish Lions, and he is certainly one option."

However, the options don't stop there. Schmidt elaborated on alternative strategies that could influence the final lineup. "To get our coverage in the back line is another option for us; we’ve got a couple of options there. Carlo Tizzano is another guy who was part of a 6:2 split against the Lions. It was literally a 5:3 split on the bench until the second-last play in training today."

The suspense over the final team composition will linger a bit longer, as Schmidt has set the captain’s run as the deadline for his final decision, asserting,

"We’ve adjusted there to where we think it is at the moment, but we’ll make a final decision at our captain's run tomorrow. It wasn’t worth putting Ben into the group because he’s not available now."

This tactic of keeping the cards close to the chest could be seen as a page out of Erasmus' playbook, who is known for his mind games. Yet, Schmidt claims his focus remains squarely on his squad: "I’ve worked with Rassie and coached against him, but I don’t focus too much on that. We’ve got a group that we’ve built over the last year or so. This time last year we got a couple of lessons from South Africa, and we like to think we’re building away and are a lot more focused on us."

As the Wallabies gear up for a significant test, the intrigue around their final lineup adds an extra layer of drama to an already pulsating rugby showdown.
