Rugby icon Jonathan 'Fox' Davies has thrown his weight behind a word of caution to Louis Rees-Zammit, urging the Welsh winger to steer clear of French clubs as he plots his rugby career revival. With Rees-Zammit's market value soaring, only a select few clubs are in the running for his signature, and Davies believes the English Premiership might be his best bet.
Davies pointed out that while Rees-Zammit's salary expectations might price out Welsh regions, English clubs like Bristol and Bath are viable contenders. "He’ll have a high wage demand, and the market itself will dictate his price. If you have teams like Bristol and teams in France looking to sign him instantly, Welsh regions are blown out of the water," Davies told Fruity King.
"He has more than 20 caps, so it doesn’t matter where he plays in terms of selection for Wales. He was pretty comfortable at the time when he was playing at Gloucester, coming back into the Welsh camp."
The decision looming over Rees-Zammit is not purely financial. At 24, the dynamic player must weigh up which club offers the best overall environment for his ambitious career trajectory. "He’ll have to make a decision as to what is right for him and where he feels that he’d be able to have the biggest impact on the field," Davies remarked, stressing the importance of balancing financial rewards with quality of play and competition.
Davies highlighted the allure of Bristol, known for their dynamic playing style, and champion club Bath as prime destinations. "If I were Louis, that would be what I would be looking for. Somewhere where I could be challenged and add value to that environment," he explained. However, the temptation of French clubs like Toulon and Racing exists, though Davies warned of potential pitfalls, referencing difficulties faced by players like Owen Farrell in the Top 14.
"Some players do struggle. It has to be a mixture of the two things. One, you’ve got to look after yourself financially, but two, there has to be the challenge, and the level of competition and drive you want in your decision as well."
Davies's insights could be crucial as Rees-Zammit weighs his options, with the rugby community eagerly watching to see where one of its brightest talents will land next.
