Former Wallabies standout Jordan Petaia is at a crossroads in his NFL career after a series of setbacks with the Los Angeles Chargers. Initially waived and subsequently placed on the injured reserve list, Petaia, who signed a three-year deal with the Chargers in April, is now grappling with a hamstring injury sustained during a fleeting appearance in a pre-season clash against the Detroit Lions.
Petaia, aged 25, has had an illustrious rugby career with 31 Test caps for Australia and participations in the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups. His transition to American football began promisingly at the International Player Pathway, impressing enough to secure a spot with the Chargers. Yet, his journey hit a snag when he was replaced by fellow Aussie and former schoolboy rugby teammate, Thomas Yassmin, who brings college football experience from Utah and a stint with the Denver Broncos’ training squad.
"Despite the setback, I'm keeping all options open and staying positive about the future,"
Petaia remarked, undeterred by the NFL’s ruthless contract dynamics. After being waived, Petaia found himself relegated to the injured reserve list, a move that casts doubt on his inclusion in the Chargers’ final 53-man roster. With Yassmin occupying an additional IPP slot, Petaia’s chances appear slim. Nonetheless, his talent hasn't gone unnoticed, with teams like the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, and Kansas City Chiefs having previously shown interest. There’s still a possibility for Petaia to be picked up as an IPP athlete by another team.
Petaia’s history with soft-tissue injuries isn’t new, and he is taking a conservative approach to recovery, aiming to avoid any long-term setbacks. The Queensland Reds, his former rugby union team, have kept the lines of communication open with Petaia since his departure to the NFL, although no formal ties bind him to the Brisbane team.
As the NFL roster deadline approaches, Jordan Petaia remains a player to watch, his resolve unshaken by the uncertainties of professional sports. Whether on the gridiron or the rugby field, Petaia's athletic journey continues to captivate fans and teams alike, hinting at more chapters yet to be written in his diverse sporting saga.
