After a fleeting venture into the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers, Jordan Petaia has made a return to the Wallabies' fold. The utility back's American football aspirations were thwarted by a severe injury that was initially underestimated.
Last week, Wallabies head coach Les Kiss named Petaia in the 34-man squad set to face the Springboks in a one-off Test in Perth. This marks Petaia’s return to the international stage since his last appearance at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.
Petaia had previously left Australian rugby in 2024 to chase his NFL dream, succeeding in a trial with the Chargers and signing a three-year contract under the International Player Pathway. However, his tenure with the Chargers was cut short after just four months due to the misdiagnosed injury.
The 26-year-old athlete shared his struggles with the misdiagnosis of what he believed to be a minor tendonitis in his hamstring. "I was kind of misdiagnosed over there," he revealed. "I kept trying to train through it. It’s hard over there when you’re new to the sport and you’re trying to prove yourself."
"I was warming up, and I was just like, ‘I don’t think it’s going to be right’."
Following a second opinion, the true extent of his injury came to light—a significant hamstring tendon issue. This realization forced Petaia to exit the NFL scene and subsequently, he joined French rugby club Perpignan for the 2024/25 season, participating in 12 matches.
Despite the setback, Petaia harbors no resentment towards the Chargers regarding the misdiagnosis, considering the situation merely unfortunate. The return to full health took between eight to ten weeks, after which he refocused his efforts on rugby.
Having put the disappointment behind him, Petaia is now fully committed to excelling with the Wallabies. He is particularly enthusiastic about the upcoming Rugby World Cup hosted in Australia next year, eager to contribute significantly to the team’s efforts.
"There’s no bad blood with the misdiagnosis. I think it’s just unfortunate," Petaia commented, reflecting on his brief NFL stint and its challenges. His resilience and adaptability shine as he transitions back to rugby, aiming to reclaim his status as a formidable player on the international stage.
