JP Pietersen is rallying behind young sensation Luan Giliomee as the Sharks prepare for a pivotal Vodacom URC showdown against Munster at Kings Park this Saturday. With key players Aphelele Fassi and Jaco Williams sidelined due to injuries, the 19-year-old rookie is set to take the stage as the starting fullback, a move Pietersen is visibly enthusiastic about.
“He’s a talented kid and it’s a great opportunity for him to showcase what he’s got,” Pietersen stated. His confidence in Giliomee isn’t unfounded; the young fullback has already proven his mettle with the Blitzboks and within the SA U20 circuit.
“He’s done well with the Blitzboks and has been in the SA U20 mix, so we’re excited to see what he can do.”
Pietersen pointed out Giliomee’s adaptability and sharp rugby acumen. “He can play nine, 10 or 15. He’s got vision, understands the game well and sees things ahead of time. He’s good under the high ball and has a solid kicking game.”
“I’ve got a lot of faith in him. I’m really excited for the young guy and I’m sure he’ll do a great job on Saturday.”
The Sharks are also tweaking their front row in anticipation of a tough battle, with Phatu Ganyane, Fez Mbatha, and Hanro Jacobs starting. The experienced Springboks duo of Ox Nché and Vincent Koch will be pivotal off the bench. “Phatu has scrummed really well against top opposition and deserves his start. Fez is back from injury and Hanro brings consistency,” Pietersen elaborated, emphasizing the strategic placement of seasoned players to seal the game in the later stages.
Last season’s quarter-final clash between these two teams was a nail-biter, decided only by a penalty shootout. Pietersen expects nothing less this time around. “They’re a quality side with a strong culture,” he acknowledged. “They never give up and they showed that against us before. It’s going to be a proper contest again.”
With the playoffs looming, each match carries weighty implications. “We’re focusing on Munster, but every game now is like a knockout match for us. We need to perform and get the result,” Pietersen admitted, stressing the importance of a strong team performance to delight the home crowd.
This weekend's line-up at Kings Park promises to deliver intense rugby action as both teams vie for supremacy in a critical stage of the URC competition.
